Bombay Velvet will always remain as a SCAR on the FACE of Anurag Kashyap.
As the movie begins and the OLD BOMBAY comes on screen; expectations are set high on the plafond. And then gradually everything comes crashing down. It had DRAMA, ACTION (Lots of it, much wasted) ROMANCE, MUSIC (Geeta Dutt Era) DIALOGUES (Some really good ones) One brilliant PERFORMANCE, with a few amazing SCENES, What was missing was A SCRIPT!
The movie is a miss and not a hit, but one performance will stay with you and that is Kaizad Khambatta aka Karan Johar. He was stylish, manipulative, suave, cunning and a stunner in his role. A few scenes between him and Ranbir are sure to stay with you, watch out for them.
(1) There is a scene in which Johnny asks for his share and Karan leaves the room and goes out to laugh on his foolishness uncontrollably and then comes back in the room all serious.
(2) Johnny calls khambatta and both don’t speak a word, that conversation over the phone is a delight to watch.
Heavily inspired by Al Pacino as Tony Montana (SCARFACE) ; Ranbir Kapoor as Johnny Balraj is also an eccentric character (a little too much) with shades of Tyler Durden ( Brad Pitt ) Fight Club.
All in all you won’t miss much if you miss this.
All in all you won’t miss much if you miss this.
BombayVelvet would have earned a better sale in the cloth market. It has an exceptional production design, brilliant cinematography and awesome art direction. Some people who need a special mention for their work are :
- Production Design by Errol Kelly(Design Consultant: Sri Lanka) & Sonal Sawant
- Art Direction by Sameer Sawant
- Set Decoration by Kazvin Dangor & Rose Maria Tharakan
- Costume Design by Niharika Khan
- Cinematography by Rajeev Ravi
This time Phantom failed to deliver what they are known for... STORY. A big fan of Anurag Kashyap movies but this time sorry to say; "He used to be a big shot" Hope he changes that soon..
